Get Out

I have always seen clips and quotes from this movie and I have always planned on watching it but never really got around to doing so. I finally was able to and it did not disappoint. Everything about the story and horror aspects made me stick to my seat throughout the movie, I couldn’t even get out of my chair in order to get a snack or go to the bathroom, that is how much I enjoyed this movie. The best parts were easily the moments where suspense was at an all time high and also when I was able to notice the little notes of symbolism within the movie.

Jordan Peele’s movies are always really fascinating whenever I get to watch them. You can always tell you are watching them based on the rich black history that he is able to implement within the movie and also his signature style of horror. His horror is both freaky but scary enough to the point where it makes you sort of cower away from the screen at certain points. Not only does he do horror well but he also is able to add pieces of black history into his movies so well that when you watch the movie again or multiple times you are able to really understand his genius. The one moment within Get Out that I really loved was when Chris is tied down to the chair and uses cotton from the chair to help him deafen the sound of the tea cup. This then allows him to escape since he does not go to the sunken place. It is this really nice piece of symbolism that is almost ironic, a piece of cotton (usually a negative symbol reminiscing of slavery) is able to help an African American man. I did not notice this at first but was able to realize this after it was pointed out to me by a rewatch.

To me this film was pretty close to perfect because of all the different elements of film making being able to combine into a fantastic horror film. The beautiful camera shots, the killer suspense, the nail biting story, and attention to detail all made me love this film. It might be because I end up loving every Jordan Peele film I watch but it doesn’t matter too much since I think a lot of people will agree with me that this film was a standout.
