Short Film Ideas
As we start to brainstorm ideas for our upcoming short film project, I think I have two main ideas that would fit well for a short film. First I was thinking about creating a short horror film. Recently I have seen many short films that do very well by using the horror genre and I think this is because you do not really need too much of a budget or crazy effects for horror. What makes these films so good is the use of the camera in ways that builds suspense and also creates mini jump scares that build up towards something greater.
The film above by Crypt TV is a really good example as it is short and simple but it gets straight to the point with the scare by using excellent camera work and of course some special effects.
The Shots and angles that I think work really well in these kinds of films are the extreme close ups and long shots. I feel that with these angles you are able to create more suspense and also eeriness when filming a horror film. Extreme long shots in spooky environments are able to really make you feel uneasy compared to just a regular shot of the same area. Close ups are able to distract the audience and then set up a jump scare which is ideally what you want in horror movies. Close ups are done really well in the clip above if you want to check that out.
The other idea we had was to make something similar to the film "Stop". We really liked how simple the film was but at the same had so much meaning behind it. I think this would be challenging to create a purposeful meaning within our film and also set up a powerful scene simultaneously. However if we are able to achieve this then ultimately it would end up as a very good short film. For this film I think a lot of close up, medium close up, and medium shot combinations would be ideal in the filming of this.
